Sucevița Monastery (Romania)

Weather…

Sucevița Monastery was built between 1581 and 1601 by the noble Movilă family and was the last of the great painted churches of Bukovina. The complex resembles a medieval fortress, with a square plan, massive defensive walls, and corner towers. Its exterior frescoes are the best-preserved in the region, with emerald green and deep red being the dominant colors. The masterpiece of the murals is the 'Ladder of Divine Ascent', depicting the spiritual struggle between virtues and vices. Uniquely, the western wall remains unpainted; legend says the artist fell from the scaffolding and the wall was left bare out of respect. The monastery houses a significant museum featuring gold-embroidered tomb covers and Byzantine art treasures belonging to the Movilă family. Surrounded by dense fir forests at the foot of the Obcina Mare hills, the UNESCO-listed monastery features a majestic and peaceful atmosphere.
