Capidava Fortress (Romania)

Weather…

Capidava Fortress is one of the most significant Roman and Early Byzantine defensive structures on the right bank of the Danube, located in Constanța County. It was established in the early 2nd century AD during Emperor Trajan's reign as a vital component of the Limes Moesiae defensive line. Built on a limestone promontory, its strategic position allowed for total control of river traffic and monitoring of the Dobrujan plains. Archaeological excavations have revealed massive enclosure walls, defensive towers, and a complex gateway system that showcase Roman military engineering. Over the centuries, the fortress was destroyed multiple times and rebuilt, notably under Justinian I in the 6th century, before its final abandonment following Pecheneg invasions in the 11th century. Today, Capidava serves as an open-air museum providing extensive insights into ancient military architecture and civilian life in the province of Scythia Minor.
