The monumental bronze statue of Stephen the Great is located in the central civic square of Bacău, in close proximity to the Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension. Inaugurated in 1997, the monument is the work of sculptor Iftimie Bârleanu, who depicted the Moldavian prince in a majestic pose, wearing a crown and holding a sword. Stephen the Great ruled Moldavia between 1457 and 1504 and is considered one of Romania's most significant historical figures due to his long and prosperous reign. Bacău held major strategic and administrative importance during his time, serving as a key hub on the trade routes of the era. The statue stands on a high pedestal made of stone and concrete, giving it a dominant presence in the public square. Today, the monument serves as a central point for official ceremonies and stands as an essential symbol of local identity and the historical continuity of the region.
