Bacău Princely Court (Romania)

Weather…

The Princely Court of Bacău (Curtea Domnească) was a significant residence for Moldavian rulers during the 15th century. It was established during the reign of Alexander the Good and later expanded and fortified by Stephen the Great to serve as a strategic administrative and military outpost. The court monitored trade routes and the nearby Trotuș Valley, ensuring control over southern Moldavia. The archaeological complex includes the foundations of the princely house, defensive walls, and the iconic 'Precista' Princely Church. Completed in 1491, the church is a prime example of the Moldavian architectural style, featuring intricate brickwork and glazed ceramic discs. Despite suffering extensive damage over the centuries from invasions and natural disasters, the site remains the most important historical landmark in Bacău. Currently, it is a protected archaeological site and museum, offering a window into the courtly life and defense strategies of the medieval Principality of Moldavia.
