Sagres Fortress (Portugal)

Weather…

The Sagres Fortress stands on the windswept Ponta de Sagres peninsula at the southwestern tip of continental Europe. It was constructed in the 15th century under the orders of Prince Henry the Navigator to strategically support Portuguese maritime expeditions. The fortress served as a secure base and research center for cartography and astronomy, laying the groundwork for the Age of Discovery. Much of the current structure dates back to the 18th century, following extensive damage caused by the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 and raids by Sir Francis Drake. Inside the grounds lies a monumental stone wind rose, known as the "Rosa dos Ventos," measuring 43 meters in diameter. Surrounded by sheer cliffs, the site provided a formidable natural defense against naval assaults throughout its long military history.
