The ruins of Miróbriga are located near Santiago do Cacém and represent one of the most significant archaeological sites in southern Portugal. The settlement has its origins in the Iron Age and developed into a thriving city during the Roman occupation from the 1st to the 4th century AD. Miróbriga was strategically positioned on the trade route between Olisipo (Lisbon) and Pax Iulia (Beja). Among the most impressive structures are the forum, the imperial thermal baths, and the only Roman hippodrome identified in Portugal to date. Excavations have revealed complex residential quarters, temples dedicated to Jupiter, and a highly sophisticated water supply system. Of particular note is the preservation of street paving and the layouts of public buildings, providing deep insight into urban life in the Roman province of Lusitania. Today, the area is protected as a national monument and features an interpretation center.
