Litoral Norte Natural Park (Portugal)

Weather…

The Litoral Norte Natural Park extends for 16 kilometers along the Atlantic coast between the mouth of the Neiva River and Apúlia in the Esposende municipality. This protected area was initially established in 1987 as a nature reserve and was upgraded to a natural park in 2005 to preserve the fragile coastal dune ecosystem. The landscape is characterized by a complex system of sand dunes, reefs, and river estuaries that provide an important habitat for numerous migratory birds. Of particular note are the 'Cavalos de Fão', a series of underwater reefs that protect the coast from erosion and house a rich marine biodiversity. Besides its ecological significance, the park plays a central role in coastal protection and serves as a sanctuary for protected plant species such as the sea holly. The integration of traditional agricultural practices in the dune areas, known as masseiras, represents a cultural peculiarity of the region.
