Leiria Castle (Portugal)

Weather…

Leiria Castle towers over the city from a high hill above the Liz River and is one of central Portugal's most iconic and recognizable landmarks. Founded in 1135 by Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, the castle served a vital strategic role during the Christian Reconquista. In the 14th century, King Dinis transformed the fortification into a magnificent royal residence, adding the elegant Gothic loggia that has famous panoramic views of the city below. The architecture is a fascinating blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Manueline styles, reflecting various stages of construction and renovation over many centuries. The ruins of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena within the walls are particularly noteworthy for their historical value. Despite heavy damage during the Napoleonic invasions, the castle was extensively restored in the 20th century.
