Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Graça (Portugal)

Weather…

The Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Graça, also known as the Fort of Lippe, stands prominently on Monte da Graça about one kilometer north of the city of Elvas. Constructed in the 18th century, this fortification is regarded as one of the most significant masterpieces of military architecture globally and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. Construction began in 1763 under the direction of the Count of Lippe and spanned nearly thirty years until its completion in 1792. The site is characterized by its complex star-shaped defense system, specifically designed to secure the strategic border with Spain. The interior houses a magnificent governor's house, a chapel, and a massive cistern that allowed for self-sufficient supply during long sieges. Today, the restored fortress functions as a museum, documenting the impressive engineering of the Enlightenment and the turbulent military history of the Alentejo region.
