Rio Alto Beach
Praia do Rio Alto is a stunning, wild stretch of coastline located in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, in Northern Portugal. Nestled behind an impressive system of sand dunes and the lush greens of the Estela Golf Club, this beach offers a secluded and deeply natural environment, far away from the bustling urban centers. The landscape is dominated by the raw beauty of the Atlantic Ocean and the extensive, golden sands that stretch as far as the eye can see.
It is perhaps best known as one of the few official naturist beaches in the north of Portugal. The designated naturist zone provides a peaceful and respectful atmosphere for those who prefer clothing-optional sunbathing, shielded by the high dunes. The natural barrier created by the dunes not only offers privacy but also provides some protection from the strong coastal winds typical of the Costa Verde.
The surrounding environment is pristine and largely undeveloped, making it a perfect retreat for nature lovers. The crashing waves and the salty ocean breeze create a refreshing, invigorating atmosphere. Visitors come here to escape the crowds, enjoy long meditative walks along the shoreline, and experience the rugged, untamed beauty of the Portuguese north coast.
Practical info
Family-friendly & For kids
While the natural setting is beautiful, the strong waves, lack of immediate facilities, and naturist designation make it less typical for traditional family beach days.
There are no specific facilities for children on the beach itself; the water can be rough, so close supervision is essential if visiting with kids.
