Roztocze National Park (Poland)

Weather…

Roztocze National Park, tucked away in the gentle, rolling hills of southeastern Poland, is a heavily forested oasis characterized by a remarkably warm and sunny microclimate. The region is distinguished by its dense, shaded forests of fir and beech, thriving on Cretaceous limestone and sandstone formations, which lend the area an almost primeval appearance. One of the most outstanding features of the park is its deeply incised, pretty river valleys, particularly the Wieprz River and its tributaries, which cascade through the woods over pleasant little rapids known locally as 'Szumy'. However, the park has achieved widespread fame for its breeding and conservation program dedicated to the Polish Konik, a robust wild horse breed closely related to the extinct Western Eurasian Tarpan. These small, resilient horses graze freely in expansive clearings, playing a crucial role in maintaining the delicate forest edge ecosystems.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Spring (April-June) is foaling season for the Polish Konik horses in forest clearings. Autumn (September-October) brings the rut and golden beech foliage.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning, the Koniks are often seen grazing in herds on open meadows. At dusk, deer and wild boar become more active.
📜
Etiquette
Do not approach the Polish Koniks as they are semi‑wild and may react unpredictably. Stay on the paths to protect the forest vegetation.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are useful for observing the Koniks from a safe distance. Good hiking boots and a camera are recommended for the hilly forest trails.
🧭
Getting there
The park is about 15 km southeast of Zamość, reachable by car via national road 85. A designated parking area is available at the park entrance.
🦌
What to expect
The Koniks are not always easy to find, as they roam widely across the park. Patience and an early start increase the chance of spotting the herds.
