Sabtang (Batanes)
Sabtang Island is a living museum of Ivatan culture and the most traditional of the Batanes islands. It is famous for its stone houses with thick cogon roofs, particularly in the villages of Savidug and Chavayan, designed to withstand typhoons. The rugged coastline features the iconic Nakabuang arch on Morong Beach and dramatic limestone cliffs. Visitors come to experience a slower pace of life and see locals wearing the "vakul" (traditional headgear). The island's terrain is characterized by steep mountains and narrow coastal roads. Traditional Ivatan dishes like "uvud" and "vunung" are must-tries during a village visit. Reaching Sabtang requires a boat ride across the turbulent waters from Ivana port in Batan. Summer months from March to June offer the calmest seas for the crossing.
