Cordillera Azul National Park

Cordillera Azul National Park is located between the Huallaga and Ucayali rivers in central Peru, spanning parts of the San Martín, Loreto, Ucayali, and Huánuco regions. This park is famous for its unique geology, particularly the striking blue sandstone mountains that give the range its name. The protected area safeguards an enormous diversity of ecosystems, from the misty cloud forests of the Andes to the lowland rainforests of the Amazon basin. Scientifically, the park is considered one of the areas with the highest rates of new species discovery in the world, as many of its remote sections remain largely unexplored. Historically, the park was established in 2001 to protect the region from increasing deforestation and illegal settlement. The reserve plays a key role as a biological corridor and is vital for regulating the water cycle in a region that depends heavily on agriculture.
