Ruins of the San José Convent (Panamá Viejo) (Panama)

Weather…

The ruins of the San José Convent are located in Panamá Viejo, the original settlement of Panama City founded in 1519. Built by Augustinian monks in the mid-16th century, the convent was one of the most important religious centers of the colonial city. It is most famous for the legend of the 'Golden Altar,' which was reportedly painted black during the devastating attack by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671 to hide it from plunderers. While the pirate reduced the city to ashes, the altar survived and was later moved to the new city (Casco Viejo). The remaining massive stone walls and arches today provide an impressive look at colonial architecture and monastic life of the era. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Panamá Viejo, the ruins are a focal point for archaeological research and tourism. They symbolize the wealth of the first European city on the Pacific coast and its tragic demise.
