Franciscan Convent Ruins (Panamá Viejo) (Panama)

Weather…

The Franciscan Convent in Panamá Viejo was one of the largest and most magnificent religious ensembles in the original city. Founded in 1573, the complex occupied an extensive area that included the church, spacious cloisters, dormitories, and gardens. The Franciscan friars played a central role in the evangelization of the local population and provided social services to the colonists. The structure was damaged multiple times by earthquakes and fires but was consistently rebuilt and expanded using both stone and wood elements. Following the destruction of the city by pirates in 1671, the convent was left in ruins as the friars relocated to the new Casco Viejo district. The current ruins, particularly the high walls of the church and the remains of the cloister, are a prominent feature of the archaeological park. They demonstrate the monumental aspirations of the Catholic Church during the Spanish expansion into Central America.
