Paseo de Las Bóvedas (Panama)

Weather…

The Paseo de Las Bóvedas is a historic promenade in Casco Viejo, the colonial district of Panama City, perched atop the city's old fortification walls. Built in the 18th century by the Spanish, the vaults (bóvedas) beneath the walkway originally served as defensive installations, dungeons, and later as storage facilities. The path gives some of the most spectacular views of the Bay of Panama, the modern skyline, and the entrance to the Panama Canal. Along the walkway, there are monuments and plaques commemorating the history of the French attempt to build the canal, particularly at the adjacent Plaza de Francia. The promenade is lined with bougainvillea and is a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. Here, colonial military architecture blends with the romantic atmosphere of the old town. The massive walls were once part of a complex defense system designed to protect the city from pirate attacks after the original Panamá Viejo was destroyed in 1671.
