Jesuit Convent Ruins (Panamá Viejo) (Panama)

Weather…

The ruins of the Jesuit Convent in Panamá Viejo represent a significant architectural record of the early colonial era. The Jesuit Order established itself in the city in 1578 and shortly thereafter began the construction of the monastery and its adjacent church using stone masonry. The structure was notable for its massive construction, which offered greater durability compared to the predominantly wooden buildings of the period. The complex served not only religious purposes but also functioned as the region's first educational center, providing instruction in theology and grammar. During the devastating raid by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671, the complex sustained severe damage and was permanently abandoned following the city's relocation to the current Casco Viejo site. Today, the remains are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering insights into the religious infrastructure and social hierarchy of the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas.
