Fort Sherman (Panama)

Weather…

Fort Sherman was a major United States military base located at the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal, west of the city of Colón. Established in 1911 during the canal's construction phase, the facility primarily served to protect the strategic waterway from naval attacks. The grounds covered approximately 9,300 hectares and were famous for their dense jungle terrain, which later made it the handy location for the Jungle Operations Training Center (JOTC). Soldiers from various nations were trained here in jungle warfare tactics, giving the post international significance. With the withdrawal of US troops in 1999 under the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, the base was handed over to Panama. Today, the area is partially developed for ecotourism, as the untouched nature and remaining historical bunker complexes provide a unique blend of history and biological diversity.
