Battery Morgan (Panama)

Weather…

Battery Morgan was one of the most powerful coastal artillery positions within Fort Randolph on Margarita Island, Panama. Named after a distinguished US officer, the battery was completed around 1913 to defend the Atlantic entrance of the Panama Canal against enemy battleships. It was equipped with massive 12-inch mortars placed in deep concrete pits to protect them from direct enemy fire. The construction required enormous amounts of reinforced concrete to withstand the immense vibrations produced when the guns were fired. Technologically, the facility was state-of-the-art for its time, featuring electric ammunition hoists and a complex telephone network for fire control. Although the guns were never used in actual combat against an invasion fleet, they served as an effective deterrent for decades. Today, the abandoned pits and ammunition magazines of Battery Morgan are a popular destination for those exploring early 20th-century military engineering.
