Wadi Qelt Nature Reserve (Palestinian Territories)

Weather…

Wadi Qelt is a dramatic desert canyon located in the Judaean Desert, stretching between Jerusalem and Jericho. As a natural oasis, it features three perennial springs, Ein Prat, Ein Fawwar, and Ein Qelt, which sustain a lush ecosystem amidst the parched landscape. The nature reserve is a vital sanctuary for birds of prey, such as eagles and kestrels, and a habitat for mountain gazelles. Historically, the wadi is of immense importance, housing the memorable St. George's Monastery (Choziba), which is precariously built into the canyon walls and dates back to the 5th century. Visitors can explore the remains of Hasmonean and Roman aqueducts that once channeled water to the city of Jericho and Herod's palaces. Hiking through the wadi gives a mix of geological wonders, archaeological ruins, and refreshing natural pools, following ancient paths that have been used by pilgrims and travelers for thousands of years.
