The city owes its growth significantly to the Sutlej Valley Project of the 1920s, which established an extensive canal system that transformed the surrounding arid lands into fertile agricultural territory. Today, Burewala is recognized regionally as a key location for the textile industry and a major market for cotton, earning it the nickname "Textile City." Besides industry, the education sector plays a central role, leading the city to be frequently referred to as the educational hub of the region, hosting numerous institutions for the surrounding rural populations. Geographically, it sits in a flat plain characterized by an intensive irrigation network that enables the cultivation of wheat, sugarcane, and citrus fruits.
