Tønsberg Fortress (Norway)

Weather…

Tønsberg Fortress, commonly known as Slottsfjellet, is one of Norway's most significant medieval sites, situated on a prominent hill overlooking the country's oldest town. In the 13th century, under King Håkon Håkonsson, Tønsberghus was one of the largest and most powerful castle complexes in Norway, surrounded by a curtain wall over 600 meters long with multiple towers. Today, visitors can see the ruins of the foundations, the castle church, and residential buildings that provide insight into medieval court life. The iconic observation tower on the summit was built in 1888 in Neo-Gothic style to celebrate the town's 1,000th anniversary and has since become Tønsberg's main landmark. The site gives expansive views over the Oslofjord and the surrounding Vestfold region. The adjacent Slottsfjellsmuseum displays important archaeological finds, including the Klåstad ship, the only original Viking ship preserved in Norway that was not a burial vessel.
