National Gallery
The National Gallery in Oslo, part of the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, is Norway's most significant art museum. Founded in 1837, the historic building on Universitetsgata housed the country's most important collection of 19th and early 20th-century Norwegian and international art for over 180 years. The gallery achieved worldwide fame primarily through its 'Munch Room,' which displayed masterpieces like 'The Scream' and 'Madonna' by Edvard Munch. The collection also includes significant works by J.C. Dahl, Christian Krohg, and international artists such as Picasso and Monet. In 2019, the National Gallery closed its doors at the old location to move to the new, monumental National Museum at Oslo's harbor in June 2022. However, the original building remains an important architectural landmark of the city and a testament to Norwegian cultural history.
