Mandal is the southernmost town in Norway, situated at the mouth of the Mandalselva River into the Skagerrak. The town was granted trading port status (ladested) in 1779 and full city status in 1921, growing wealthy through the export of salmon and timber, as well as a significant merchant fleet. The historic center, known as 'Gamle Mandal', is characterized by its well-preserved white wooden houses built during the 18th and 19th centuries. A major landmark is Sjøsanden, one of Norway's longest and most famous sandy beaches, located directly adjacent to the urban area. Mandal is also renowned as the birthplace of numerous famous artists, including sculptor Gustav Vigeland and painter Adolph Tidemand, whose legacies are honored at the local museum. The Mandalselva River is currently one of the country's most productive salmon rivers, attracting anglers from around the world. The maritime culture is celebrated annually during the Shellfish Festival (Skalldyrfestivalen), which draws tens of thousands of visitors to the coastal town.
