Horten Naval Base (Norway)

Weather…

Karljohansvern in Horten was the most important base for the Royal Norwegian Navy for over 150 years. The base was established in 1819 by royal decree, as its strategic location on the Oslofjord was convenient for defending the capital. The site comprises an impressive collection of military architecture, including barracks, shipyards, and the Navy Museum, which is considered one of the oldest in the world. The museum documents the fleet's development from sailing ships to modern submarines and houses the KNM Utstein as a walkable exhibit. Another significant structure is the garrison church from 1852, built of brick in neo-Gothic style. Karljohansvern was also an innovation center where the first Norwegian aircraft, Start, was built. Today, the area is open to the public and combines its military past with modern cultural use, studios, and residential spaces, making it a unique monument of Norwegian defense history.
