Eidsvoll Manor (Norway)

Weather…

Eidsvoll Manor, situated roughly 60 kilometers north of Oslo, is celebrated as the birthplace of modern Norwegian democracy. It was within these walls that the Constituent Assembly gathered in the spring of 1814 to draft and eventually sign the Constitution of Norway on May 17th. The building was originally constructed around 1770 and was later extensively remodeled in the Neoclassical style around 1800 by the businessman Carsten Anker. Its grand architecture and sophisticated interiors served as a fitting backdrop for the historic political deliberations of the 112 delegates. Following Anker's bankruptcy, the house was purchased by the Norwegian state in 1851 to be preserved as a national shrine. Today, the manor operates as a museum that provides deep insights into the political crisis of 1814 and Norway's struggle for sovereignty from Denmark and Sweden. For the bicentennial celebrations in 2014, the building underwent a major restoration to return its appearance exactly to how it looked during the constitutional debates.
