Eidsvoll Church (Norway)

Weather…

Eidsvoll Church is a medieval stone church built around the year 1200 in Romanesque style. It is closely linked to the birth of modern Norway, as the delegates of the National Assembly met here for service in the spring of 1814 before adopting the constitution at the nearby Eidsvoll Manor. The church is one of the country's oldest cruciform churches and stands on a historically significant site where the Eidsivating, an important regional thing assembly, was once held. Over the centuries, the building was severely damaged by fires several times, notably in 1762 and 1883, and subsequently rebuilt in the contemporary style of each era. During the restorations after 1883, it acquired its striking neo-Gothic appearance with characteristic brick towers. Inside, the church houses a valuable 18th-century altarpiece and pulpit. As a national monument, it symbolizes the connection between Christian tradition and democratic development in Norway.
