The Taraba wildlife sanctuary, primarily encompassed by the Gashaka-Gumti National Park, stands as Nigeria's largest and most diverse protected area. It covers an area of approximately 6,731 square kilometers along the border with Cameroon, featuring a transition from tropical rainforests to montane grasslands. The region hosts an extraordinary range of biodiversity, including rare primates such as the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee, as well as leopards and hippopotamuses. Historically, the park was officially established in 1991 through the merger of two existing game reserves to preserve the West African savanna ecosystem. Geographically, the area is defined by rugged terrain and significant watercourses like the Taraba River, which sustains local agricultural activities. Today, the sanctuary serves as a critical hub for scientific research and the conservation of endangered species in West Africa. The maintenance of this ecological corridor is essential for the transboundary movement of wildlife between Nigeria and Cameroon.
