The Gobarau Minaret in Katsina is one of the oldest and most significant examples of Islamic architecture in Nigeria. Constructed in the 15th century during the reign of Muhammadu Korau, the first Muslim King of Katsina, it was originally part of the city's central mosque. While the main mosque building deteriorated over centuries, the minaret remained standing as a testament to the region's historical craftsmanship. Standing about 15 meters tall, the tower was built using traditional mud-brick and straw materials, characteristic of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style. It historically served both as a call-to-prayer platform and a strategic watchtower to spot incoming threats across the flat plains. Today, it is a protected national monument and a symbol of Katsina's ancient status as a center of Islamic learning and commerce.
