Prony is a captivating historical village located at the southern tip of New Caledonia, where history and nature are inextricably linked. Established in the 19th century as a penal colony, the site is now famous for its atmospheric ruins, which have been dramatically reclaimed by the roots of massive banyan trees. Beyond its dark history, Prony evolved into a hub for timber and later the nickel industry, with the nearby Goro Nickel plant continuing this legacy into the modern era. The village is also a prime destination for eco-tourism; between July and September, Prony Bay becomes a nursery for humpback whales, making the village the main departure point for whale-watching expeditions. The striking contrast of the region's iron-rich red soil against the lush greenery and the deep blue sea creates a unique aesthetic. Prony gives a silent, powerful testimony to the island's colonial past and its rich maritime biodiversity.
