Prony Village (New Caledonia)

Weather…

Prony Village was established in 1867 as a logging camp to provide timber for the construction of Nouméa. Later, it became a key site in New Caledonia’s penal colony system, housing convicts who labored in the nearby iron mines and forestry sectors. After the prison closed and mining operations shifted elsewhere, the village fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. Today, the site is famous for its haunting ruins, where the stone structures are being slowly reclaimed by nature, specifically the massive roots of Banyan trees that engulf the walls. The region's distinct red, iron-rich soil provides a striking backdrop against the turquoise waters of the Bay of Prony, a designated sanctuary for humpback whales during the southern winter. Visitors can follow a historical trail through the remains of the bakery, dormitories, and early industrial machinery. The current serenity of the site belies its harsh colonial past, offering a unique blend of industrial archaeology and ecological resilience in the Great South of the island.
