Canala Mining Region (New Caledonia)

Weather…

The Canala Mining Region, located in the rugged heart of New Caledonia, is the historic cradle of the industry that remains the backbone of the island's economy today. It was here in 1864 that the French geologist Jules Garnier discovered the first deposits of nickel ore, later named garnierite in his honor. This discovery triggered an industrial transformation that reshaped the island's destiny. Beyond its mineral wealth, Canala is deeply significant as a center of Kanak cultural identity and resistance, particularly during the great uprising of 1878 led by Chief Ataï. The landscape is a striking blend of deep tropical valleys and mountainsides scarred by early open-cast mining activities. Despite the industrial heritage, the region has incredible natural beauty, such as the striking Ciu Waterfalls. Visiting Canala provides a profound understanding of the complex relationship between natural resources, colonial history, and the enduring traditions of the indigenous people, set against a backdrop of dramatic geological formations.
