Bourail is situated on the scenic west coast of Grande Terre and serves as the primary agricultural hub of New Caledonia. The town is particularly famous for its extensive cattle ranching, a heritage celebrated every August during the Bourail Agricultural Fair, which is the largest rural event in the archipelago. One of its most iconic natural landmarks is the "Bonhomme de Bourail," a unique quartzite rock formation at Roche Percée beach that has been shaped by erosion to resemble a man's head. History enthusiasts can visit the New Zealand Military Cemetery, a significant site from World War II where over 200 soldiers from the Pacific campaign are buried. The surrounding region is also characterized by the memorable Gouaro Deva dunes and diverse ecosystems, offering excellent opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and surfing in the turquoise waters of the lagoon.
