Roche Percée Reserve (New Caledonia)

Weather…

The Roche Percée Reserve in Bourail is a coastal sanctuary of immense ecological value, famous for its dramatic geology and its role as a biodiversity hotspot. Named after the "Pierced Rock," the area's most iconic feature is "Le Bonhomme" (The Gentleman), a massive stone pillar standing defiantly in the surf. This reserve is a critical nesting ground for the endangered Loggerhead sea turtles, making it one of the most significant sites in the entire South Pacific. During the nesting season from November to March, female turtles return to the dark volcanic sands to lay their eggs, a process carefully guarded by local environmental volunteers and rangers. The reserve also protects rare remnants of coastal dry forest, which provide a haven for endemic birds and unique plant species. Hikers can enjoy cliffside trails that offer panoramic vistas of the crystalline lagoon, merging education on conservation with the raw beauty of New Caledonia's shoreline.

🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is best for observing turtles leaving the sea. Late afternoon also provides good chances, as the animals are more active then and approach the shore.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a respectful distance of at least five meters from turtles. Do not use flash or artificial lights to avoid disturbing or blinding the animals.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are useful for observing turtles from a distance. Sturdy footwear is recommended for exploring the rocky coast and nearby trails.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is a few kilometers south of Bourail, easily accessible via the coastal road. Short walking trails from the parking area lead to viewpoints and the beach, with signs indicating the way.
