Kalahari Desert

Weather…
Water temperature…
The Kalahari is a vast, sandy basin covering much of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa, often described as a semi-desert or fossil desert. Unlike the Namib, the Kalahari receives enough rainfall to support a variety of grasses, acacia trees, and scrub bush. Its iconic red dunes, colored by iron oxide, are generally longitudinal and stabilized by vegetation rather than being mobile. Geologically, the Kalahari forms part of the larger Kalahari Basin, a massive deposit of sand that blankets the interior of Southern Africa. The region is the ancestral home of the San people, who have lived as hunter-gatherers here for thousands of years, developing sophisticated survival skills. In Namibia, the Kalahari is home to many private game reserves and commercial farms where wildlife like springbok, gemsbok, and the famous black-maned Kalahari lions roam. Water scarcity is the defining challenge, forcing many animals to derive moisture from tsamma melons and succulent underground tubers.
