Myeik (formerly Mergui) is a port city in southern Myanmar's Tanintharyi Region on the Andaman Sea, with around 285,000 inhabitants. From the 16th to the 18th century Mergui was one of Southeast Asia's most important ports and the gateway to the Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya - Portuguese, Dutch, French and English traders all maintained factories here. In 1687 the 'Mergui Massacre' occurred, when Siamese troops killed more than sixty Englishmen in the service of the English East India Company. After the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826) Mergui passed to Britain (British Burma 1886-1948). Off the town lies the Mergui Archipelago, with more than 800 mostly uninhabited tropical islands and the home of the Moken sea nomads. Myeik is today the centre of Myanmar's pearl farming and edible bird's-nest harvesting industries.
