Mount Chiu (Monte Chiu) is located in the remote Niassa Province of northern Mozambique and is a prominent geological formation within the Niassa Reserve. Rising to an altitude of approximately 1,634 meters above sea level, this massive inselberg towers over the surrounding savanna landscape. The elevation consists primarily of ancient granitic rock and is ecologically valuable, as it creates a microclimate that supports specialized flora and fauna. At higher elevations, remnants of montane forests can be found, providing shelter for numerous endemic plant species. For the local Yao people, Mount Chiu holds deep cultural and spiritual significance and is often associated with traditional rites. Due to its difficult accessibility, the nature on Monte Chiu has remained largely untouched, making it an important refuge for endangered species in the Niassa region.
