Besac Fortress
Besac Fortress is a prominent historical fortification located in Virpazar, Montenegro, proudly overlooking the stunning expanse of Lake Skadar. Built by the Ottoman Empire in the late 15th century, it played a crucial role in controlling the region and defending against various regional conflicts. Over the centuries, control of the fortress shifted, and it even served as a prison during the Italian occupation in World War II. Today, it stands as one of the most significant cultural heritage sites in the Crmnica region, an area deeply renowned for its historic winemaking traditions. Following extensive restoration works, the fortress is now open to the public, offering visitors a captivating glimpse into Montenegro's turbulent past. Exploring the well-preserved stone walls and watchtowers is a highlight, but the true reward is the panoramic viewpoint. From the top, you are treated to breathtaking vistas of Lake Skadar, the surrounding wetland ecosystems, and the rolling hills of the Montenegrin countryside.
