Nekropola stetshaka Mramorje

Mramorje is one of the most significant medieval necropolises in the Balkans, located in the village of Perućac in western Serbia near the scenic Drina River. This archaeological site features an impressive collection of "stećci," which are monumental medieval tombstones characteristic of this region. Dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, the necropolis offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval funerary art and local history.

The site was once much larger, but today it preserves dozens of these ancient limestone markers, many of which are intricately carved. Visitors can admire various shapes of stećci, including slabs, chests, and gabled roof types.

Unlike some other necropolises, Mramorje's monuments are mostly devoid of rich ornamentation, but their massive size and the sheer number of them standing together create a solemn and striking atmosphere. Recognizing its immense historical and cultural value, the site has been protected and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Stećci Medieval Tombstone Graveyards, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
