Bulgan, whose name means sable in Mongolian, sits at 1,208 metres above sea level in a fertile forest-steppe along the Achuut River and has been the capital of the namesake province since 1938, with around 13,000 inhabitants. Located 320 kilometres northwest of Ulaanbaatar, the town's Russian-Mongolian wooden houses and tidy gardens give it a storybook feel that contrasts sharply with typical steppe towns. Bulgan is the birthplace of Jügderdemidiin Gürragchaa, Mongolia's first cosmonaut, who flew aboard Soyuz 39 to the Soviet Salyut 6 space station from 22 to 30 March 1981, becoming the first Asian in space not of Chinese or Vietnamese origin. The province is Mongolia's foremost grain-growing region, with around 250,000 hectares of wheat fields. The surrounding larch and birch forests are home to wolves, wild boar and red deer, hunted under licence in spring and autumn.
