Khövsgöl Lake is one of the oldest and purest lakes in the world. With its crystal-clear water, which is of near-potable quality, it attracts nature lovers from around the globe. The region is home to the Tsaatan, reindeer herders whose unique culture is closely tied to the taiga. Visitors come here to hike, ride horses, or experience the nomadic way of life in traditional ger camps. The lake freezes completely in winter, forming a spectacular ice surface where the annual Ice Festival is held. The flora and fauna are impressive: Siberian ibex, elk, and brown bears live in the surrounding forests. Local cuisine is characterized by meat dishes like buuz (dumplings) and fresh fish from the lake. Access is usually via the town of Mörön and onwards to the village of Khatgal on the southern shore. Summer (July and August) is the most popular time to visit, as the climate is mild. For adventurers, however, winter has an incomparable experience on the ice.
