Temple of Kukulcan
The Temple of Kukulcan, famously known as El Castillo, stands as the architectural centerpiece of the ancient Maya city of Chichén Itzá in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. This 30-meter-tall step pyramid is a masterclass in pre-Columbian engineering and astronomical alignment. Its design incorporates 365 steps across its four sides and top platform, directly corresponding to the days of the solar year. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, the temple displays a sweeping optical phenomenon: the setting sun casts a series of triangular shadows against the northern staircase, creating the illusion of a feathered serpent undulating down to the stone snake head at the base. This event symbolizes the descent of the god Kukulcan. Archaeological studies have revealed that the pyramid was built over a smaller, ancestral structure, which houses a hidden red jaguar throne and a sacrificial Chac Mool statue. As one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the temple is not only a UNESCO World Heritage site but also a testament to the sophisticated cosmic understanding of the Maya, making it for those exploring world history.
