- Keep an eye out for free-roaming dogs, which are common in rural Belizean villages.
- Respect the privacy of the Maya and Mestizo residents by always asking before taking portraits.

Chan Chen is a historically rich village located in the Corozal District of far northern Belize, near the Mexican border. The name of the settlement originates from the Maya language and means 'small well,' referring to the region's vital water resources. The modern village was established in the mid-19th century during the Caste War of Yucatán by Yucatec Maya people fleeing the conflict on the peninsula. Geographically, the village lies approximately 13 kilometers north of Corozal Town and a short drive from the Santa Elena border crossing. Chan Chen is home to significant ancient Maya archaeological sites in its immediate vicinity, dating back to the Late Preclassic period. Today, the local economy is dominated by sugarcane cultivation, which is the primary source of income for the approximately 700 residents. Despite ongoing modernization, the community preserves its cultural identity through the maintenance of the Maya language and traditional religious festivals. Its strategic position along trade routes between Mexico and Belize has made Chan Chen an important hub for regional exchange. Infrastructure includes basic educational facilities and connection to the national electricity grid.
