Temple of the Masks (Kohunlich) (Mexico)

Weather…

The Temple of the Masks is the defining landmark of the Kohunlich archaeological site in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Dating from the Early Classic period, the structure is renowned for the monumental stucco masks that line the central staircase, depicting the Mayan Sun God, Kinich Ahau. These impressive friezes, each standing nearly two meters tall, exhibit the Petén architectural style, suggesting strong cultural ties with Mayan centers in present-day Guatemala. Originally, eight masks adorned the facade, but only five remain well-preserved today. Due to the delicate nature of the lime stucco, permanent thatch roofs have been constructed to shield them from erosion and the humid tropical environment. The site is uniquely characterized by its surrounding groves of Cohune palms, providing a lush backdrop to one of the most significant iconographic displays in the Yucatan Peninsula.
