Merida Cathedral (Mexico)

Weather…

The Merida Cathedral, officially known as the Catedral de San Ildefonso, is a historical monument of exceptional importance, being the oldest cathedral built on the American mainland. Constructed between 1561 and 1598, its robust structure incorporates stone blocks from the former Maya temples of the pre-Hispanic city of T'ho. The exterior architecture reflects a sober Renaissance style, appearing almost fortress-like, which served a defensive purpose during the early colonial period. Inside, visitors can admire the "Cristo de la Unidad" (Christ of Unity), a birch wood crucifix standing nearly eight meters tall, symbolizing the reconciliation between Spanish and indigenous heritage. Situated on the eastern side of the main square (Zócalo), the cathedral remains the focal point of spiritual life in Yucatán, impressing visitors with its monumental simplicity and massive dome.
