Pyramid of the Moon (Mexico)

Weather…

The Pyramid of the Moon is the second-largest structure in the ancient city of Teotihuacán, standing majestically at the northern terminus of the Avenue of the Dead. Rising to a height of 43 meters, it was constructed between 200 and 450 AD through several successive building phases, each enlarging the previous structure. The pyramid was dedicated to the Great Goddess of Teotihuacán, the deity of water, fertility, and earth. Archaeologists have discovered numerous burial chambers within the pyramid containing ritual offerings, including jade, obsidian, and animal sacrifices, highlighting its significance as a primary site for state-sanctioned religious ceremonies. At its base lies the Plaza of the Moon, an expansive ceremonial space surrounded by 12 smaller temple platforms that together served as a grand stage for public rituals. For modern visitors, the vantage point from the pyramid has the most iconic panoramic view of Teotihuacán, stretching down the entire length of the Avenue of the Dead toward the Pyramid of the Sun, providing a profound sense of the city's vast scale and sophisticated urban planning.
