Taxco de Alarcón is situated in the state of Guerrero and is internationally renowned as Mexico's silver capital. The city clings to the steep slopes of the Sierra Madre del Sur and is famous for its labyrinthine cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses topped with red tile roofs. Founded by the Spanish in 1528 following the discovery of rich silver deposits, Taxco experienced a golden era in the 18th century under the patronage of José de la Borda. The city's architectural crown jewel is the Church of Santa Prisca, a masterpiece of Mexican Baroque (Churrigueresque) style featuring a magnificent façade and gilded altars. In the 1930s, American silversmith William Spratling revitalized the traditional craft, establishing Taxco as a hub for high-quality jewelry design. Today, the city remains a major tourist destination that has meticulously preserved its colonial character and is celebrated for its annual Silver Fair.
