Le Réduit (Mauritius)

Weather…

Le Réduit is a prestigious historical estate in Mauritius, currently serving as the official residence of the President. The grand manor was built in 1748 under the direction of French Governor Barthélemy David. Originally, it was designed as a secure refuge for the colonial government in the event of an invasion, hence its name, which translates to "The Redoubt." Its strategic location at the tip of a plateau, surrounded by the deep ravines of the Cascade and Profonde rivers, provided a natural defense against potential attackers. Architecturally, it is a magnificent example of French colonial design, featuring spacious verandas and high ceilings that house a significant collection of period furniture and artworks. The estate is also renowned for its vast botanical gardens, spanning over 250 acres, which contain a diverse array of rare tropical flora and century-old trees. While the building itself is rarely open to the public for security reasons, it remains one of the island's most important heritage sites, representing the evolution of Mauritian history.
