Ile de la Passe Fortifications (Mauritius)

Weather…

Ile de la Passe is a small, rocky islet off the southeast coast of Mauritius, standing guard at the entrance to the historic Bay of Grand Port. Its strategic location made it a coveted military outpost for centuries, serving as a key to controlling the maritime routes of the Indian Ocean. It is most famous as the site of the Battle of Grand Port in 1810, the only naval victory for Napoleon's fleet over the British Royal Navy. Today, the island is home to significant archaeological remains, including ruins of barracks, gunpowder magazines, and artillery batteries built by both the French and the British. Reachable only by boat from Mahébourg, the island has a rugged and desolate charm. Visitors can walk among the historic stones and rusty cannons while enjoying panoramic views of the turquoise lagoon, reflecting on the intense naval combat that once decided the colonial fate of Mauritius in these very waters.

Visiting
The fortification ruins on Ile de la Passe are only reachable by boat and can be freely explored - the site is unsecured. Visiting is possible during daylight, but be careful of uneven stones and crumbling walls.
🕒
Typical hours
Since the island is uninhabited, there are no opening hours - access is at your own risk during daylight. Trips are usually arranged with local boat operators who depart by appointment.
📷
Photography
Photography is allowed everywhere on the island - the ruined casemates and wide sea views make great subjects. A wide-angle lens works well to capture the entire complex.
⏱️
Time needed
Allow about 1 to 2 hours for exploring the ruins and the surrounding coastline. The boat ride from Grand Port or Mahebourg adds roughly 20 minutes each way.
Combine with
Combine the visit with a trip to the nearby Ile aux Fouquets Lighthouse - both islands lie in the same bay. A detour to historic Grand Port and its museum is also worthwhile.
🧭
Getting there
Access is solely by boat; private operators in Mahebourg or Grand Port arrange trips to the island. It is advisable to arrange in advance with a fisherman or tour guide.
💡
Insider tip
Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is very uneven and littered with debris - sneakers or hiking shoes are good. Bring insect repellent since mosquitoes may be present on the island.
