Fort Frederik Hendrik
Located in Vieux Grand Port, Fort Frederik Hendrik is a site of immense historical significance, marking the location of the first permanent European settlement in Mauritius. Established by the Dutch in 1598, the fort was named after Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange and served as the administrative heart of the Dutch colony until its abandonment in 1710. The strategic coastal site was later reoccupied and expanded by the French. Today, the ruins offer a fascinating archaeological journey through different colonial eras, with remains of a church, a bakery, and military barracks still visible to visitors. A small on-site museum houses artifacts discovered during various excavations, providing detailed insights into the challenges faced by early settlers, the beginnings of the island's colonial economy, and the strategic importance of Mauritius in the trans-Indian Ocean trade routes.
